Sewing: A Lost Skill Worth Reviving?

In this modern age of technology, it's sometimes easy to forget the traditional crafts and skills that have been around for centuries. One of these skills is sewing, which used to be a common household activity however, in recent decades it has become less popular due to the introduction of fast fashion and prices of raw materials soaring due to exchange and import costs.

"I don't have the patience"

"I don't have the time"

"It's too technical"

"Why sew when it's cheaper to buy?"

Some of the feedback I've received over the years from strangers, friends and family members.

I have generations of sewers in my family however, I didn't fall in love with sewing until after my first born so I can relate. At this point in time I am the only person in my circle of friends that sews which speaks volume when it comes to how many people in my circle sews.

Let's look at the benefits of sewing and why it's important.

The Benefits of Sewing

Sewing has many benefits. It can help you express your creative side, it's a great way to save money on clothing and other items (by making items that fit well), and it's a skill that can come in handy when you need to repair or alter something. Sewing is also a great way to relax, as it requires focus and concentration.

Why Sewing Is Worth Keeping Alive

Sewing is a valuable skill that can help us to express our creativity, save money, and even make a living. Here are some of the reasons why it's worth reviving:

  • Creativity: Sewing is an enjoyable and creative activity that can help us to make unique and beautiful garments, accessories, and home decor.
  • Cost-Effective: Sewing can save you money in the long run. You can make clothes to your exact specifications and you don't need to rely on expensive store-bought items.
  • Financial Potential: Sewing can even be a source of income. You can make handmade items and sell them online or in stores.

How to Keep Sewing Alive

Sewing is a skill that is worth preserving and sharing with the younger generations. Here are some ways to keep sewing alive:

  • Teach Others: Share your knowledge and skills with others. You can teach friends, family members, or even start your own classes.
  • Encourage the use of authentic fabrics: Sewing with high-quality fabrics can help keep the craft alive. Sewers can create unique items that will last for years. Plus, it helps to support local textile makers.
  • Inspire Creativity: Encourage others to express their creativity through sewing. Share inspiring stories and showcase unique creations online via social media.
  • Share Resources: Support local businesses and organisations that offer sewing-related resources and supplies. This will help to keep this craft alive and thriving.

Sewing is an important skill that should not be forgotten. It is a valuable and creative activity that can be used to save money, make a living, and even express our creativity. We can help to keep this skill alive by teaching others, inspiring creativity, and sharing resources.
